But I need to get something off my chest first.

OpenAI did not “buy” OpenClaw.

I’ve seen this headline recycled across LinkedIn, X, and every AI newsletter for the past week. Sam Altman posted that Peter Steinberger is joining OpenAI to “drive the next generation of personal agents.” Within hours, the internet decided this was an acquisition.

It’s not. OpenClaw is MIT-licensed. You can’t acquire MIT-licensed software.

What OpenAI bought is 100% access to the maintainer and his cooperation.

They hired the person, not the project. If they don’t handle this well, the community will fork it tomorrow. They don’t own it — they have better access to it.
